Reaper Sonoma County Pinot Noir 2010

The limpid strawberry red robe and broad water band are evidence of the cool 2010 growing season in Sonoma. This was the coldest vintage in a generation right through the end of August, when an intense heat spike lead to rapid ripening.  This resulted in mature clusters that lacked full physiological ripeness.

The slow, significant tearing on the sides of the glass, indicating high glycerin content, is good visual evidence that this was not a problem in 2010. Fresh tilled earth, ripe strawberries and rich leather are all present in the complex nose. The bright attack is sustained with great mid-palate richness, bright acidity and a medium-length, pure finish.

Reaper Sonoma Pinot Noir 2010 is a fascinating wine that is drinking great today and will reward an additional year or two of careful cellaring. This is a classic, elegant Pinot Noir that will pair well with the subtle flavors of salmon, duck, mushrooms or rich stock.
